Why SSC CGL Rejects Photos
SSC's online portal has an automated validation system that checks your photo before accepting it. The most common rejection reasons are:
- File too large — photo is above 50 KB (most common issue)
- Wrong dimensions — not exactly 200×230 pixels
- Coloured background — grey, blue or any non-white background
- Wrong format — PNG or HEIC instead of JPEG
- Face not visible — wearing cap, sunglasses or mask in photo
- Old photo — taken more than 6 months ago
- Studio watermark — digital photo has studio watermark

Photo Requirements — Detailed Rules
Background Colour
SSC requires a plain white or light-coloured background. Photos taken outdoors, against walls, or with any texture in the background are likely to be rejected. If your background is not white, use our Background Remover to change it to white before resizing.
Face Visibility
Your face must be clearly visible and occupy approximately 70–80% of the frame height. No caps, hats, sunglasses, goggles or masks. Spectacles are generally allowed but avoid tinted lenses.
Photo Recency
The photo must have been taken within the last 6 months. During SSC's document verification stage, they compare your application photo to your appearance — using a very old photo is a risk.
File Format
Only JPEG (.jpg) format is accepted. If your photo is a PNG (common when taking screenshots or using iPhone), use our Format Converter to convert PNG to JPEG — this alone often reduces file size by 60–80%.
SSC CGL vs Other SSC Exams — Spec Comparison
| Exam | Photo Size | Photo KB | Signature | Sign KB |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SSC CGL | 200×230 px | 20–50 KB | 140×60 px | 10–20 KB |
| SSC CHSL | 200×230 px | 20–50 KB | 140×60 px | 10–20 KB |
| SSC MTS | 200×230 px | 20–50 KB | 140×60 px | 10–20 KB |
| SSC GD | 200×230 px | 20–50 KB | 140×60 px | 10–20 KB |
| SSC Steno | 200×230 px | 20–50 KB | 140×60 px | 10–20 KB |
Good news — all SSC exams use the same photo and signature specifications, so once you have the right files you can reuse them across SSC CGL, CHSL, MTS, GD and Steno applications.
